I mean the thumbnails that appear in the screen used to open a file for use in Elements 8, they worked in Elements 7. I know about the Explorer thumbnail and don't use the organizer yet

I believe this is a Windows 7 thing. File Open windows (and Windows Explorer) don't show thumbnails of NEF files unless you download the proper codec file. Perhaps someone can point you to the right...

To build on Paige's answer, Nikon does not provide a codec for showing NEF thumbnails on 64-bit Windows. If you do a Web search for "codec nikon nef vista 64" you'll see lots of useful information....

Thanks, I will persue that thought. View NX does show the thumbnail above the full screen correctly as does the camera transfer program.
